How Do I Measure Gates Accurately

When it comes to having bespoke garden or driveway gates, it is important to ensure that the measurements are as accurate as possible. Not only will this ensure that the gates fit within the gap, but also to fill the gap entirely with minimal visible gaps.

Why We Need To Measure

When it comes to our homes, no matter how excellent your builder is/was, there will always be a number of quirks that mean that some walls aren’t 100% straight, some doorways are a little crooked, and the occasional brick is out of line. This is the same with your external features. So when it comes to your gates, you have to prepare for your walls (or fencing depending on what your new gate will affix to) to be out of line at some point. If we were only to take the measurement at the top of the wall, it could mean that you may either have a gap at the bottom, or not enough space to close your gates.

Taking Measurements

There are a number of measurements that you will need to take to ensure that your gates will fit perfectly.
Firstly you need to consider the height of your gates. You need to ensure that you leave enough gap at the base of your gate to ensure that they can open and close with ease. Ideally, you will take this at both sides, as you can get varying heights at either side.
Secondly, you will need to take the base measurement. Remember to take this where you wish for the gate to end, this means leaving a gap between the bottom of the gate and the floor as previously mentioned. You will need to repeat this at the top of your gates, whether this be full height or half-height gates. Remember to reduce your measurements by 25mm (1 inch) to allow for fixtures.
