The Difference Between Hardwood And Softwood Gates

When it comes to selecting between hardwood and softwood gates, there are a number of things to consider. While we absolutely love both types of wood, we want you to know some of the pros and cons of each before making your decision.

Hardwood

Hardwood is more often than not considered the premium wood to have something created from. And while it does have its great positives, these need to be considered alongside the negatives to decide whether it is the right choice for your project. Here are some either way for using hardwood for gates.

Pros

  • Superior grain
  • Heavier than softwood (Also see Cons)

Cons

  • Heavier than softwood
  • Turns Silver/grey over time
  • Takes longer to grow – not as sustainable

The weight of hardwood gates can be considered both a pro and a con. This is due to a couple of reasons, some of which depend on the circumstances surrounding the gates. The weight can make them heavier to open, which is great for stopping small children and animals from escaping, but not so good if you are struggling to open them yourself. It can be considered a negative if the gates are attached to something that cannot withstand the use of such heavy gates over a long period of time. It may mean that they regularly need stabilising, while we do our best to create a strong support for every set of gates, unfortunately depending on what they are attached to this can wear over time due to the weight.

Softwood

Here at BK Timber, we love using softwood on a range of our projects both inside and outside of your home. As with hardwood, this type of wood also has a number of pros and cons.

Pros

  • Easy to manipulate
  • Sustainably sourced and easy to grow
  • Lighter than hardwood

Cons

  • Regular treatments required (biannually)
  • More subtle wood grain

Softwood is a great material to use for a wide variety of projects thanks to its easy to manipulate nature. Thanks to its lightweight properties, it makes for a great material for anything that needs to be hung on walls (such as gates).

Sustainable Timber

Here at BK Timber, we pride ourselves on using PEFC and FSC certified timber. It is very important to us that we support the safeguarding of the world’s forests by using sustainable timber. Our gates are produced from the highest of quality Scandinavian Slow Grown, Joinery Graded redwood timber.
