What is Concrete Post Mix?

Post mix concrete from BK Timber is a versatile concrete product that is ideal for both DIY and larger. For gardens, it provides strong foundations for gate and fence posts plus the base of paving and pathways.

For our latest blog, we are going to tell you everything you need to know about using post-mix on a variety of projects.

Post Mix Explained

Post mix concrete is a ready-mixed concrete which is a mixture of cement and ballast. It is sometimes referred to as Postcrete which is specifically designed for setting timber, concrete or metal fence posts. You can also use it for smaller jobs in the garden, including setting objects in place, such as pots or ornaments.

It is a great time saver as its mixture is already made up and ready to use plus you will save money as you can just make up what you need each time. Our brand of post-mix is available in conveniently-sized bags when required.

Using Post Mix

You will need between a third and a whole bag of Post Mix Concrete for each hole for 75 x 75mm and 100 x 100mm fence posts. This equals roughly 11 bags of Post Mix for eight fence panels. Gate posts work harder than posts because of the gate movement, meaning you could use three to four bags.

Posts need to be buried from 2 feet to 2 feet 6 inches into the ground, depending on the height of the fence. The Post Mix should be placed around the post but not underneath, as the concrete can trap water and soak the post leading to decay.

If the ground the post is based in isn’t free-draining then a small layer of shingle can be placed under the fence post to assist with drainage.

Pour half a bag of Post Mix Concrete into the hole, with more required for larger holes and posts. Pour clean water around the post’s base using a watering can with a fine rose. After just two minutes check vertical alignment of the post with the spirit level. Adjust post positioning if needed and repeat this process, directing water onto the post at ground level until the hole is filled. Setting will take between 15 and 20 minutes.
